As 2018 draws to a close, and 2019 peeks its head around the corner, are you filled with excitement for the year to come? Fingers crossed the answer is YES. And do you know why? Because this is the year for you to finally grab those opportunities, focus on you, and shine like the Disney princess we all know you are. #BringOutYourInnerBeyonce
OK, so that sounds amazing, right?! But you’re probably wondering how on earth you’re going to make this happen. Well, it all starts with a simple yes.
This year, I want you to SAY YES to those opportunities that come your way, those random events, those dinners with friends, and those opportunities to focus on you – because all of these tiny little decisions we make on a daily basis really can lead to living your best life.
You’re probably sitting there right now thinking “I do say yes to opportunities”, and that’s great – but I want you to dig even deeper and say it more. Because you never know when one random event, or decision to go somewhere can lead to finding the love of your life, your dream job, or better yet your dream classic car – come on, priorities people!
Life gets in the way, we all know it; trust me I’ve been there. We all have those days when we want to get in from work and do nothing, but life is not meant to be all work – and recovering from work. You HAVE TO find time for the fun, the adventures, and the spontaneous weekend trips!
I’m not saying you need to say yes to everything, but next time, before you say an automatic no; why not think about it and make an effort to say yes to one thing out of your comfort zone each month?!
I love to look back on my life — the good, the bad, and the ugly — and follow my yes path. What’s that you say? Well, it’s the decisions that I’ve made that turned out to be instrumental to where I am today.
And so, without further ado – I’m going to run through my path to give examples of how Saying Yes to even the smallest things can lead you to a journey of unabashed fun, adventure, and self-love.
For me, it all started when I was working in my first job as a print designer. The bright-eyed 18 yr old me saw areas of the business that could be improved, but the owner of the company was afraid of change – so long story short, I left the company to say yes to starting my own design company, and boy did it pay off.
From that initial decision of leaving my first job, I always looked for those yes moments – and they have led me to some amazing moments, from taking that little design company to make its first million dollars, hiring a team of six, and then ultimately making the decision to get rid of our office and go remote.
That decision of saying yes to working remotely led me to finally traveling the world — which I’d seen very little of at that point — making new friends, learning new sports, meeting the love of my life, learning to live a life that was true to me, and very recently got engaged!
If I hadn’t said yes to starting my own company, I would have never had the opportunity to travel for the past five years full-time, if I haven’t said yes to that invite to hang with a friend in Norway I would have never met my fiancée. And if I hadn’t said yes to quitting my job and focusing on the Saying Yes project – I wouldn’t be writing this post right now from my cozy base in the Cotswolds, England.
If I hadn’t said yes – I might still be living in the town I grew up in, I might be in a job that I hate, and I wouldn’t have my lovely lady to share the adventure of life with. I wouldn’t be being true to myself and what makes me happy.
Sure, each decision was scary and threw me well outside of my comfort zone – but life’s an endless adventure and just because something is scary doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing – in fact, from my experience I’ve found the exact opposite to be true!
OK, so enough about me, this post is supposed to be all about you – and the fantastic things that are heading your way for 2019 if you just reach out and grab em.
But instead of just saying “Hey you, go say yes to stuff” I figured that I’d make it easy for you and break down those “yes moments” to once per month challenges that anyone will be able to fit into their regular lives.
Let’s start easy – say yes to one thing that you’ve had on your bucket list for ages – think of it as a New Years present to yourself!
Say yes to something outside of your comfort zone, like going to an event on your own and letting your social butterfly free!
Say yes to learning something new. Have you always wanted to speak a new language but haven’t gotten around to it yet? Now’s your time to shine!
Say yes to booking a relaxing weekend away. Sometimes life gets crazy, and it’s important to take a step back and remember what’s important.
Say yes to trying something new; this could be anything from dyeing your hair to swimming with leopard sharks.
Say yes to treating yourself. Ain’t no reason you can’t book a spa day just for you!
Say yes to finding your own life opportunity. Don’t wait for opportunities to land on your lap, go out there and find one for yourself!
Say yes to stepping up your career. Whether you’ve been putting off asking for a promotion, writing that book, or starting your own business – it’s time to say yes.
Say yes to embracing a fear. Let’s conquer those fears that are holding you back, I used to be terrified of heights – but made myself go skydiving and now I can happily say I’m now entirely comfortable being at the top of a mountain!
Say yes to trying a new sport or fitness class. You never know, you might find your new fave hobby!
Say yes to making a new friend. We know, it can feel awkward making friends as an adult – but it can also lead to having great people in your life that you would never have known otherwise.
Say yes to a week of saying yes to life. The ultimate challenge, and great for the festive season, have your friends and family pick your activities, schedule, and even outfits if you’re especially brave – for an entire week!
Before I sign off, I want to let you in on a little secret. When I first started living my own challenge to say yes more often in life, I could have sworn that I said yes to pretty much every adventure that came my way – but by paying more attention, I realized that I actually said no a heck of a lot.
If you take nothing else away from this article, I hope that it just makes you think twice before saying no. You would be so surprised by the rewards you can reap if you do make the leap!
